It is possible for your pool step to crack, although it is unlikely. Repairing a broken pool step can
be done quickly and on your own. We provide a detailed breakdown of how to repair cracks in pool steps and some helpful photos to assist you.
You will need to ensure your pool step is clean and dry before repairing it. You should drain
your pool water to the minimum level possible. Step repairs are recommended when replacing a
liner to get the best results.
If you are replacing a pool liner, do not drain it completely. If you’re not replacing the liner, you should only reduce the water level enough to repair it.
Step 2: Identify the crack
The photo below shows that the step has cracks that have been repaired previously but are in
dire need of new repairs.
Step Three: Clean and Prep
Use a towel to dry the area. The area must be dry to the touch.
Clear away any large pieces of debris with a putty knife or scraper.
Use a rotary bit to grind the cracks from end to end.
Use 100-grit sandpaper to smoothen the crack area.
To remove any remaining debris or dust, clean the room again.
Step 4: Apply the Fiberglass Repair kit
The directions for applying your fiberglass repair kit will vary depending on which kit you choose. Follow the instructions provided with your equipment. In our example, we used a mesh patch and a repair kit to ensure a solid, substantial repair.
Step Five: Sand and Smooth
After your fiberglass repair kit has had time to harden and cure, smooth the repair. You can use
simple sandpaper to do the job, but we recommend that you wear a dust mask so you don't
inhale any fiberglass dust as you work.
You are done sanding once the repair is smooth to touch and matches the level of existing
steps.
Step Six: Recoat / Repaint
After sanding the area, use a towel to wipe away dust, debris, and moisture. If you must protect the edges of the coping or liner near where you are painting, you can use masking tape. Apply the epoxy paint with a paint roller, and then use your paintbrush to trim the edges. Let the first coat dry completely (4-6 hours for a clear day). Apply another coat. Apply a second coat. Allow the paint to dry completely. Check the dry time indicated on the color can before refilling your pool. Depending on how hot it is, it may take 4-7 days. To protect your new paint, ensure
you balance the pool water immediately after refilling the pool. TIP: Make sure the pH is at least 7.4 and your alkalinity to 100 ppm.
